England and Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be out of action for six weeks at least, following a ligament strain in his knee, which he picked up in the opening game of the Premier League.

Manager Arsene Wenger confirmed the unfortunate development at a press conference held on Tuesday.

Oxlade-Chamberlain hobbled off the ground after sustaining the injury in the opening tie against Aston Villa on Saturday, which Arsenal lost 1-3.

“He will be out for at least six weeks. He has a posterior cruciate problem, a ligament which is stretched,” Wenger said.

“We don’t think it will need surgery. He is consulting tonight, but it will be at least six weeks out”, added Wenger, as reported by Sky Sports.

But things appear far worse than Wenger’s assessment, if we were to go by Oxlade-Chamberlain’s tweets later on. The player wrote on his official Twitter feed: “Gutted I’m injured so early in the season.”

“But I’m going to be working hard to hopefully be back playing in 3 months. Thanks 4 all ur support”, he signed off.

He will also miss England’s World cup qualifier games to played against Moldova and Ukraine in the month of September, and the games against Poland and Montenegro, to be played in October.

He will also be missing crucial games for Arsenal in the Premier League as well.
