Alisson Becker vs Ederson Moraes: Statistical analysis from 2019

The English Premier League is blessed with probably two of the best goalkeepers in world football right now - Ederson Moraes and Alisson Becker. Not only are the two among the best in the world, but they also are among the most expensive stoppers in the game.

There is no doubt that if Ederson and Alisson were from different nationalities or different generations altogether, both of them would be the first choices for their national team. But in a twist of fate, Brazilian national coach Tite has had to choose one over another to represent the Selecao.

It is highly debatable about who is better between the two, as Ederson won the Premier League with Manchester City while Alisson was crowned as a European Champion with Liverpool, this past season.

Today we take a look at some statistical comparisons between the two Brazilian shot-stoppers purely based on their form in 2019.

In the English Premier League

Golden Glove winner last season, Alisson Becker has been prolific for Liverpool in the English Premier League. The 27-year-old has conceded only 19 goals in 25 matches in the calendar year 2019 which averages to 0.76 goals per game. We must also remember, he missed a total of 7 matches this season due to a calf injury.

Becker had an edge over every other keeper in the League last season as he managed to make an astonishing 76 saves in total. He has 16 saves to his name already this season despite missing 7 games due to injury.

On the other hand, Premier League Champion Ederson has been more clinical in the goal as he has only conceded 20 goals in 32 matches, averaging to 0.63 goals conceded per game. He absence in the Liverpool-City clash at Anfield earlier this season was one of the key reasons why Liverpool beat the English Champions 3-1 to extend their lead at the top of the table.

The City goal-keeper has a tally of 32 saves in England this season with just 15 matches played which is more than half of the 58 saves he had in the entire last season.

In European Competitions

In a campaign which saw Liverpool clinch their sixth European title at the Wanda Metropolitano in Spain, Alisson was one of the key figures in the squad. He had a very successful Champions League campaign as he conceded only 12 goals in 13 matches during the competition. However, the Brazilian international's biggest achievement could be the fact that he managed to keep a clean sheet in the Champions League Final against Tottenham.

In the current season, Alisson hasn't yet managed to keep a single clean sheet conceding 3 goals in 3 games, as he missed the first two games due to injury.

Meanwhile, his Brazilian counterpart Ederson Moraes who crashed out of the Champions League in the semi-final stage last season also had a very similar record as he conceded 12 goals in the 12 games that he played in Europe.

It will be fair to say that Ederson has been in better form in Europe in the calendar year 2019, as he successfully managed to keep 3 clean sheets and conceded only 3 goals in the Champions League this season, taking his overall tally to 15 European goals conceded in 2019.

For Brazil

Record nine-time winners Brazil beat Peru 3-1 in the final to lift the Copa America 2019 trophy, and an interesting piece of trivia is the fact that this was the only goal conceded in normal time by Brazil in the entire tournament.

Alisson was preferred by national team coach Tite over Ederson as Brazil's number one, and the former went on to play every minute of the Copa America 2019.

Ederson, on the other hand, has been in goal for Brazil on six occasions in 2019, conceding six goals and maintaining only one clean sheet in the process. Brazil's record with the City shot-stopper is pretty disappointing as they have managed just one win in those 6 fixtures.

There always seems to be a healthy competition between both the goal-keepers in England, Europe and as well as in the International arena. However, one thing is clear that this healthy competition can only benefit Brazil and the entire world of football.
