With England due to host a potentially dangerous Hungary on Tuesday, Gareth Southgate took the opportunity to rest to most of his regulars. He named a starting XI comprising mostly fringe players. While some of them rose to the occasion to strut their stuff, others faltered.

Tammy Abraham rediscovered his scoring touch in front of goal, while Conor Coady and James Ward-Prowse also made a mark at both ends of the field.

Jadon Sancho ended the night with two assists, but the jury was out on his all-round game. Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard did not do too much of note before he was substituted.

#2 Phil Foden delivers another immaculate display from midfield

Phil Foden has long been identified as the future of England's midfield. The Manchester City academy graduate has grown in leaps and bounds over the last few years.

He has benefited immensely from the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, and this season has seen an exponential increase in his output. The 21-year-old was handed his tenth England cap against Andorra. Foden marked the occasion by running the show in midfield for his country.

Foden constantly dropped deep to demand the ball, and his vision and technique were on full display for England's opening two goals on the night. His influence waned somewhat in the second half. But it took nothing away from another splendid display from the youngster.

England were favourites to progress from Group I. And so far, the 1966 world champions look on course to book their spot on the plane to Qatar 2022.

The victory over Andorra saw England maintain their four-point lead at the summit of the group standings. So far, they have accrued 19 points from seven games, with the only blemish coming in their 1-1 draw away to Poland in September.

Gareth Southgate's side are due to host Hungary at Wembley on Tuesday, where another win will put them on course for a seventh consecutive appearance at the World Cup.

Only the group winners in all ten groups qualify automatically for the FIFA World Cup, with all runners-up advancing to the play-off round. The fact that second and third-placed Albania and Poland will face one another on Tuesday makes qualification more straightforward for England.
