Pirlo was at the top of his game during the 2006 World Cup campaign and had already been named man-of-the-match twice before the infamous final. Ten minutes after Zidane opened France's account at the finals with a penalty, Marco Materazzi equalized with a header from an Andrea Pirlo corner.

The match as we all very well remember ended in a defeat for France and a red card for Zidane. Pirlo who had been causing havoc for France from dead ball situations was named man-of-the-match for the third time in the tournament.
