Arsene Wenger
Arsene Wenger is seriously considering the out of contract former Arsenal star

What's the story?

After having sold Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool and loaning Carl Jenkinson to Birmingham, the Gunners are on the lookout for some cover for Hector Bellerin and now latest reports from The Express claim that Arsene Wenger is closing in on re-signing former Arsenal player Bacary Sagna.

The 34-year-old was a huge fan favourite during his time at Arsenal and with Sagna now a free-agent, the potential signing could be a huge boost to the sagging morale of the Arsenal boardroom and fans.

Sagna is currently a free-agent

Although out of contract, Sagna is still one of the best right-backs in the Premier League and capable of doing a job when called upon. Part of the French national team at the moment, the 34-year-old will be glad that clubs of the calibre of Arsenal are interested in securing his signature.

A Premier League veteran, Sagna has more than 350 appearances in the top flight and will definitely add some tactical nous and experience to Arsene Wenger's side.

The heart of the matter

Arsenal have had a shambolic start to the season having suffered damaging losses to Stoke City and Liverpool in the last 2 games. Their defensive strategy has come under a lot of fire and the addition of Sagna could provide some calm and composure to the backline.

Also, Sagna has a wealth of experience and he will definitely add some depth and quality to the side. Given the fact that he has already played under Arsene Wenger, the Frenchman should not take too long to get adjusted to the way the Gunners play.

A quality backup option to Hector Bellerin, Sagna could prove to be a very astute signing for Arsene Wenger and Arsenal.

This is the reason why Arsenal fans love Sagna so much.

Author's take

While Sagna is 34, the Frenchman is available for a free and is still among the top right-backs in the world. Blessed with good pace, positioning and most importantly tactical nous, the veteran full-back will definitely be a quality addition to the Gunner's side if the deal does indeed go through.
