Arsenal are set to make a £16 million bid for Chelsea target and Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira, according to the Express.

Real Madrid midfielder Khedira has been linked with Chelsea and a reunion with Jose Mourinho for a number of months, but a move has failed to materialise. Khedira was missing for the majority of this season with a knee ligament injury, but he beat the race against time to be fit for the World Cup.

The German international had surgery on the injury earlier in the season and looked set to miss out on the World Cup as well. However, he is now fit and Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is keen on snatching Khedira from the grasp of Mourinho, a man he worked with for three years during the Portuguese’s tenure at the Bernabeu.

The 27-year-old will have a tough fight to get into the current Chelsea XI, with the likes of Ramires, who has been linked with a move to Madrid, along with the likes of Nemanja Matic and John Obi Mikel in central midfield areas.

That could work well in Arsenal’s favour, with Arsene Wenger willing to offer a guarantee of first-team football to the German international. Khedira seems set to start in Germany’s opening World Cup game.

Khedira won 9/27 tackles in La Liga last season – a 33% success rate.
