Reports: Arsenal told to pay £40 million for German star

Manchester City v Arsenal - Premier League
Arsene Wenger could be finally getting his target

What's the story?

Premier League side Arsenal have been told to splash £40 million for German international Julian Draxler by the player's current club Paris Saint-Germain according to English media outlet Mirror.

The Gunners have been long-term admirers of the attacker and are ready to make a bid when the winter transfer window opens in January.

In case you didn't know...

The 24-year-old was linked with the London based club even during his days at Schalke. However, the German ended up moving to Bundesliga rivals Wolfsburg in 2015.

In January 2017, Draxler made another switch. This time to French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint-Germain. Draxler has not been able to establish a first-team spot at the Unai Emery-managed side. With Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Edinson Cavani making the front three position their own, Draxler's chances of starting have taken a hit.

The heart of the matter

Paris Saint-Germain will demand an amount of £40 million from Arsenal if the Gunners want to land their long-term target Draxler if the report from Mirror is to be believed. The deal would see the former Wolfsburg player become Arsenal's fourth most expensive signing.

It has been also reported that the French club are ready to rival Manchester City for the signing of Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez, who has made up his mind on moving away from the Emirates. This points at a possible swap of players between the two clubs.

Author's take

With Sanchez and Mesut Ozil expected leave Arsenal, Draxler sounds like a perfect target for the Gunners. The 24-year-old could prove to become a key player for the Arsene Wenger-managed side in no time.

However, if both Sanchez and Ozil leave, Arsenal will have to make one more major signing in order to challenge for a UEFA Champions League spot.
