Arsenal or Barcelona? Where will De Ligt go?

With Per Mertesacker in the final few months of his playing career, Arsenal are expected to sign a centre-back in the summer. The Mirror reports that Arsenal have identified Ajax's Matthijs De Ligt, who is also FC Barcelona's top defensive target.

De Ligt is one of the most highly rated youngsters in the game at the moment and is garnering rave reviews since making his Ajax debut last year. He recently made his international debut against Portugal. De Ligt is termed by many as Gerard Pique's successor in Barcelona.

Arsenal do have a task in their hands if they are to lure the teenage defender right under the noses of Barcelona. But the lure of playing in the Premier League and a regular starting berth may make Arsenal's case easy to sign De Ligt this summer.

Arsenal are reportedly in a fix over accepting Jack Wilshere's demands to sign an extension with the club and are thinking of letting the midfielder go on a free transfer. Wilshere has a £90,000 per week offer on the table from the Gunners but is holding out for a better deal.

The Telegraph understands that Arsenal are assessing the situation of Max Meyer of Schalke 04, who is also in the last year of his contract and has decided not to renew his contract with the club. The 22-year-old has long been on Arsenal's radar and is reportedly looking for a move to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Arsenal's midfield woes are supposedly set to run deeper this summer, with Jack Wilshere, Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla all expected to be dropped from the first team roster.

The Daily Mail has claimed that Arsenal are the latest club to register interest in Leicester City's Wilfried Ndidi. A source close to the player has even revealed that the Gunners are now the favourites to land the Nigerian midfielder.

With Wilshere and Ramsey still undecided on committing their future with the club, the central midfield position has now become a big issue to solve for the club this summer. Ndidi has been one of the finds of the season and has been linked with Manchester United and Liverpool.

He joined Leicester in January 2017 in a £15 million deal from Genk. Ndidi has made 36 appearances for the Foxes this season. It is also reported that his compatriot and Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi has requested Ndidi to join him at the Emirates.
