Arsene Wenger predicts the number of points needed to win the Premier League this season

Wenger believes this season will be tough

This season’s Premier League title race is turning out be a very close one. Right now there are 5 teams at the top of the league that are separated by a single point. Manchester City Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all dropped points over the weekend

Liverpool and Chelsea picked up all three points and closed the gap on their rivals. Now City, Arsenal and Liverpool are joint top with 20 points each, with Chelsea and Spurs on 19. Last season also started out in similar fashion but Leicester City ended up being runaway title winners.

But Arsene Wenger believes this title race will be mich closer and more competitive. Last year the Foxes had a total of 81 points with Arsenal coming in second with only 71 points. It was one of the lowest tallies for a Premier League champion and shows how poor the big teams performed.

Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool have all strengthened over the summer and the competitiveness is reflecting on the league table. Wenger feels this season a team will need more than 80 points to win the title.

Speaking at Arsenal’s AGM he said, “We have a competitive team in a competitive league. If you look well after nine games, the first trend is set, as they have 20 points. So the champion will have 82-86 points. Every game is a fight in this league.”

“In every game, you have to be absolutely at your best to win. For everyone else it is exactly the same, you have to be really focused on details, at a top, top level for every game. Every detail can make a difference to get you points.”

The Chairman of Arsenal also confirmed that they will try and extend Wenger’s contract. Sir Chips Keswick said, “We all recognize the fantastic contribution of Arsene Wenger, his huge energy, passion and desire, and we are confident of his ability to take us forward. We will sit down and discuss his future at an appropriate time, but our current focus is our strong run and competing for trophies.”

Wenger gives update on Ramsey’s injury

Aaron Ramsey has been out for a couple of months now after picking up an injury in the opening day defeat against Liverpool. He has had a couple of setbacks and his recovery has been slow but Wenger gave good news on his comeback.

Speaking to Arsenal.com on the team news ahead of the game against Reading he said, “I think Olivier will be included, but for Aaron it is too early although he is back in full training now.”

Santi Cazorla is currently out of action for the Gunners so this is very good news for Wenger and his team
