If you thought, Cardiff City’s owner Vincent Tan was weird for his obsession with number 8, here’s another owner of a Premier League club with a different obsession of his own.
Hull City owner Assem Allam has claimed that if the club’s name change is not sanctioned by the Football Association within the next 24 hours, he will walk away from the club. The owner wants ‘City’ to be dropped from the Club’s name and instead the club be re-branded as ‘Hull Tigers’, where Tiger bears reference to their nickname.
This move has been vehemently opposed by the Hull City loyalists, who have even taken to protests at recent home matches. The campaign is led by the group- City Till We Die, although the owner has stood his ground and has told the group that they can “die as they want”.
He has further threatened to step aside, if the proposed name change does not take place.
He said: “No one on earth is allowed to question my business decisions. I won’t allow it.
“I can give you my CV to give you comfort, for what I do in business, what I have achieved, but for someone to come and question me is not allowed.
“I am here to save the club and manage the club for the benefit of the community. It will never, never be the other way round – that the community manage it for me.
“But if the community say go away, I promise to go away within 24 hours.
When quizzed about his response if the name change isn’t ratified, he said: “Still the same thing. It’s a free country. No two ways about it. Have I ever said something and went back on it? No.”
This news comes as a blow for the Tigers, who are expecting to shatter their club-record transfer fee with the capture of Nikica Jelavic from Everton and also look set to sign Shane Long.
Although, Allam has offered his financial backing, but he is still convinced that should the proposed name change be rejected, he will part ways with the club.
