What's the story?

Former Manchester United star Andy Cole is of the belief that LaLiga leaders Barcelona are ready to let go of the services of Philippe Coutinho this summer.

In case you didn't know...

Since his record £142 million transfer from Liverpool in January 2018, the Brazil international has failed to replicate his Premier League form at Barcelona and has not been able to meet the high expectations that came with such a move.

Despite having eight goals to his name so far this season, the former Liverpool star is struggling to get on the team-sheet regularly, especially after the rise of Ousmane Dembele. Moreover, Frenkie De Jong's arrival in the summer will further increase the competition for a place in the starting eleven.

Coutinho was named on the bench during Barcelona's Champions League clash with Lyon last night and was brought on during the second half, but failed to influence the game in any way.

The 26-year-old, whose contract expires in 2023, has been heavily linked with a move back to the English top flight with clubs like Chelsea and Manchester United interested in signing him.

The heart of the matter

Former United star Cole has now stated that the Catalan giants may be ready to let go of Coutinho and the expenses associated with such a hefty transfer this coming summer.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS, he said, "To spend that kind of money on an individual you would expect him to play week-in, week-out but it seems Barcelona would be willing to let him go if they get the right offer for him."

"They have got a talented kid there in Dembele though."

"If he can stick to turning up on time instead of sleeping in! He's special, but seems he can't get out of bed in the morning."

What's next?

After they were held to a draw against Lyon in the Champions League, Barcelona will hope to extend their lead in LaLiga when they face Sevilla on Saturday.

As for Coutinho, he would be looking to regain a semblance of the form he showed at Liverpool if he is to try and secure a regular starting berth in the side.
