Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is a major doubt for the UEFA Super Cup showdown against Chelsea after picking up an ankle sprain in the 1-1 draw against Freiburg.

Schweinsteiger was hauled off with ten minutes to play and Bayern in the lead after Xherdan Shaqiri found the back of the net to give the German champions a 1-0 lead.

But Freiburg’s Nicolas Hofler fired past Neuer in the 88th minute to leave Bayern coach Pep Guardiola to rue his side’s missed chances and Schweinsteiger’s injury.

“He [Schweinsteiger] sprained his ankle,” the Spanish coach said. “There will be a medical check tomorrow. I hope he will play on Friday, but we do not know that yet.

“We played well, very well. But if you’re only 1-0 up in the Bundesliga, things like this can always happen. We never stopped attacking and we had chances. But I’m very, very proud of my players.”
