Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has been disqualified as the club's director following the sanctions placed on him by the UK government.

The oligarch is one of six Russian personalities whose assets have been frozen and travel restricted by the UK government following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich announced earlier that he plans to sell the club. It was reported that he values the club at £3 billion sale ($3.9 billion). However, with the sanctions, this has been put on hold.

Apart from the proposed sale being paused, the Blues cannot transfer or loan players and have restricted income sources as well. However, Abramovich’s troubles were compounded earlier today by the Premier League via a statement. He has been disqualified as the club's director although the club is still free to train and play its fixtures normally.

It is currently unclear what kind of long-term implications the recent sanctions will lead to for the club. The Russian owner is still largely expected to sell the club.

Chelsea expected to undergo largescale changes due to Roman Abramovich controversy

The European Champions are largely expected to be demoted into a period of transition due to the controversy. Their kit sponsor, Three, have put their deal with the club on hold with immediate effect. Meanwhile, another sponsor, Trivago, claimed to be looking forward to a change in ownership and will support the club throughout the process.

However, the controversy has already led to partial lay-offs at the club shop with multiple players and even the manager being linked with a move away.

Former Liverpool player and now pundit Jamie Carragher encouraged Manchester United to make a move for the Blues manager Thomas Tuchel. The Red Devils are looking for their long-term manager and will do well to replace Ralf Rangnick with his fellow German and former pupil.

As many as nine players have been linked with free transfers in the summer. Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta are reportedly close to agreeing to move to Barcelona after their contract expires in the summer.

Antonio Rudiger has also been linked with Manchester United in addition to some of the Europe’s biggest clubs, including Juventus and Barcelona. Chelsea obviously have a strong base with a plethora of young players out on loan. However, the sanctions can still be expected to have a large-scale impact.
