Can Manchester City win the Premier League?

After the 6-0 trumping of Tottenham at the Ethiad stadium Manchester City proved yet again why they were considered as favorites to win the Premier League. A ruthless display in front of goal clinical finishing and pace on the wings coupled with steady defense proved the point yet again that when City is in full flow they are unstoppable.

The reaction of Andre Villas Boas at the end of game reflected a sense of disbelief as to what had transpired on the pitch.Tottenham who came into the game with the record of having 1 of meanest defenses in the Premier League were cut to shreds with Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo making the Tottenham defense look pedestrian at times with the likes of Jesus Navas proving why Manchester City paid the big bucks for his services.

However, Manchester City has not been able to emulate this form consistently this season especially away from the Ethiad where indifferent performances have resulted in defeats against Sunderland and Cardiff City. The absence of Vincent Kompany at the heart of defense has left a huge void which cannot be filled by City with the likes of Martin Demichelis and Joleon Lescott not being able to step up to plate when required. But the crisis at the back has not been limited to just the defense with Joe Hart performances in recent games suggesting a dip in form leaving City with no option but to go with young goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon or to stick with Hart.

Also Manuel Pellegrini footballing policy has resulted in City playing free flowing football but has also resulted in them being loose at the back and thus shipping in more goals which were not the case under Mancini rein.

With that being said and done there have been many positives for Manchester City this season. Sergio Aguero has returned to form in some style and sits on top of the goal scorer charts in the Premier League. Another player who been the backbone of City since he arrived has been Yaya Toure. The Ivory Cost midfield has been a dominating presence in the middle of the park in most games but has also added an element of goal scoring to his game play along with some precision free kicks with bulls eye accuracy.Alvaro Negredo has been best signing in the summer fitting in seamlessly in the team and linking up with deadly accuracy with Aguero.

Manuel Pellegrini has also succeed in taking City to knockout stages of the Champions League a feat which his predecessor Roberto Mancini could not achieve. However mere progression to knockout stages is not going to satisfy the bosses at Ethiad who believe that City is capable of challenging for both Premier League as well the Champions League.

It is not hard to see why there are high expectation from City with squad depth to challenge top clubs of Europe with the likes of David Silva and Edin Dzeko on the bench to bring on just goes to show the quality which City posses. The overall quality of the squad of City is far superior as compared to their title contenders in the Premier League with only Chelsea coming close to match City’s squad. However it remains to be seen will it all come together for Manchester City and will Pellegrini men are able to meet the burden of expectation or crumble under it.
