MANCHESTER, ENGLAND – SEPTEMBER 25: Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez of Manchester United celebrates scoring their first goal during the Capital Cup Third Round match between Manchester United and Liverpool at Old Trafford

Javier Hernandez‘s goal early in the second half gave Manchester United victory against Liverpool in their Capital One Cup third round tie. Here’s a summary of last night’s results.

Manchester United 1- 0 Liverpool

After an embarrassing defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League this past weekend, Manchester United managed to bounce back with a win against Liverpool in the Capital One Cup. Liverpool fielded a full-strength team including a certain Luis Suarez, who was playing his first match since being banned for 10 matches acrimoniously last season. The Uruguayan, however, was far from his best.

A lively first half was marked by a glaring lack of shots on goal.

Respite for the Red Devils came in the form of a goal right at the beginning of the first half. David Moyes had barely made his way to the home dug-out when Hernandez converted off a Wayne Rooney corner. A diving header by Victor Moses, which David De Gea did extremely well to save, and a vicious Luis Suarez free-kick did threaten to level the score, but it wasn’t to be. United eventually walked away with a much-needed victory against one of their fiercest rivals.

Arsenal 1- 1 West Bromwich Albion

Thomas Eisfeld slotted in the opener at the hour mark from a Nicklas Bendtner pass, resulting in a goal for the German in his first start for the Gunners. West Brom equalised just 10 minutes later with a close range header by Saido Berahino, who had scored a hat-trick in round two. The game dragged on to penalties as neither side could get a goal in extra-time. In the shootout that followed, the Baggies did have the lead after Luke Daniels denied Serge Gnabry’s attempt. However, misses by Craig Dawson and Morgan Amalfitano meant Arsenal won by a 4-3 margin.

Birmingham 3- 1 Swansea

Holders Swansea were brought crashing down to earth by 2011 winners Birmingham. Just seven months after Michael Laudrup’s side won their first major piece of silverware in their 101-year history, a resurgent Birmingham put Swansea to shame with an inspired performance. Victory was ensured with goals by Dan Burn, Matt Green and Tom Adeyemi – all coming in the second half. Wilfried Bony pulled one back for the Swans in the final minute of the game.

Newcastle 2- 0 Leeds

Papiss Cisse’s first goal of the season and Yoan Gouffran’s shot from the edge of the box meant Newcastle walked away with an easy win at St. James’ Park.

Stoke City 2- o Tranmere

Stoke City made their way into the fourth round with a 2-0 victory over Tranmere on Wednesday night. Stephen Ireland and Peter Crouch netted goals in a match where lowly Tranmere did little to trouble Stoke.
