Champions League 17/18: Chelsea 1-1 Barcelona - Player Ratings

Chelsea FC v FC Barcelona - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: First Leg
All to play for in the 2nd leg

Barcelona proved once again that a single mistake by the opposition is enough for the Spanish giants to punish them. The Blaugrana's dominated the entire the game but failed to find the back of the net with Chelsea defending brilliantly at the back until that 1 mistake from Christensen which proved costly for the hosts.

Willian struck either side of the post twice in the 1st-half before finally managing to score just after the hours' mark. Barcelona started to become desperate with each passing minute. The Blues who were so good at the back made 1 mistake and Messi punished them, thus managed to open his account at the Stamford Bridge.

Here are the player ratings from the game.

Barcelona

Chelsea FC v FC Barcelona - UEFA Champions League Round of 16: First Leg
Messi finally scores against Chelsea

Ter Stegen - 5/10

Ter Stegen would be one happy man tonight. He was beaten on all 3 occasions by Willian but would consider himself lucky that just one of them ended at the back of his net.

Sergi Roberto - 6/10

It was clear that he was not comfortable playing as a full-back. He struggled against an energetic Hazard.

Gerard Pique - 7/10

A decent game for Pique, however, Hazard and Willian made his life difficult when on the move with the ball.

Samuel Umtiti - 6/10

Umititi has had better games before. He was strong but struggled to deal with Chelsea's attack at times.

Jordi Alba - 7/10

Used his pace down the flank and to get out of trouble, however, couldn't connect with Messi as often as he did previously.

Sergio Busquets - 7/10

Physically, a strong display from the player. He was splendid in the midfield but failed to close down Willian in time for the goal.

Ivan Rakitic - 6/10

He could have had a better game. had some sloppy moments at times and was slow with the ball on certain occasions.

Paulinho - 6/10

The former Spurs player had the best chance to score but missed it. He looked lost and couldn't keep up with the players around him.

Andres Iniesta - 8/10

Dominated the possession but failed to break down a formidable Chelsea defence. He was the 1st to react from Chelsea's mistake and set up Messi for the goal.

Lionel Messi - 8/10

There is no denying the fact that Messi was always on the move and found spaces with the ball. He finally managed to break his duck against Chelsea.

Luis Suarez - 6/10

A frustrating night for the Uruguayan. He lacked the quality when in Chelsea's box. Was quiet for the most part of the 1st half.

Substitutes

André Gomes - N/A

Gomes came on at the extra time of the 2nd half.

Aleix Vidal - 5/10

Coming on the pitch with a just a little under 30 minutes to go, Vidal barely featured in the game.

Chelsea

Willian celebrating his fantastic goal at the Bridge

Thibaut Courtois - 7/10

The Belgian had very little to do in the 1st half as the visitors hardly managed to test him. He was called upon more in the 2nd half and couldn't really do anything regarding Messi's goal.

Cesar Azpilicueta - 9/10

The £7m defender had one of his best games tonight. Defensively he was spot on. Calm and composed led the team front the back.

Andreas Christensen - 6/10

The Danish defender was also having one of his best games until a silly error from the youngster allowed the visitors to get back into the game. A costly mistake which cost Chelsea dearly.

Antonio Rudiger - 7/10

The German international was chosen ahead of Cahill tonight who's power and pace came in handy. Also looked threatening when on the move with the ball.

Victor Moses - 7/10

The Nigerian was solid at the back and was disciplined while defending. Thanks to his pace, he also caused problems while moving forward on the right wing.

N'Golo Kante - 8/10

The Frenchman dominated the midfield and had a lot of pressure with just Fabregas alongside him. He coped well and didn't allow Barca's midfield any space.

Cesc Fabregas - 7/10

He was in the starting lineup with only one job - defend. Did well with Kante helping him along. He was also involved in some key passes up front.

Marcos Alonso - 7/10

He defended well and coped up with Barca's attack. He went forward more in the 2nd half but his aerial presence was just not enough.

Willian - 9/10

Arguably Chelsea's best player on the pitch tonight. Willian was superb while attacking and defending. He came close to scoring twice before he actually got his name on the scoresheet. If only one of those two shots been a goal, the Blues would have been heading to Camp Nou with a 1-goal lead.

Eden Hazard - 8/10

Chelsea didn't have much possession in the game but they did, he made sure to make it count. Cause troubles in the opposition half and was effective when on the move.

Pedro - 7/10

Probably one of the quietest men in the front three for the hosts. Offensively, he didn't contribute much but his defensive skills cannot be ignored.
