Champions League 2016/17: Real Madrid 4-2 Bayern Munich (6-3 aggregate), Player Ratings

Ronaldo and Marcelo were two of the best players on the pitch

In what was a horribly officiated game, Cristiano Ronaldo took advantage of Bayern Munich going down to 10 men and scored a hat-trick in a 4-2 victory for Real Madrid.

Lewandowski opened the scoring from the penalty spot to give Bayern Munich some hope. Then two quick fire goals, a header from Ronaldo and a Ramos own goal saw the game head into extra time.

With Bayern down to 10 men following Arturo Vidal’s sending off, the game seemed to be heading in only one direction and a nice touch and volley from Ronaldo gave Madrid the lead. The Ballon D’or winner then killed off the tie after some nice work from Marcelo left him with a tap in for his hat-trick. Marco Asensio then rubbed salt in the wounds with a fantastic solo goal to seal a 4-2 win.

Vidal was harshly sent off for a second yellow card and both Ronaldo’s second and third goals were offside, which will anger Carlo Ancelotti and his side as they suffer a miserable journey back to Germany.

Let’s look at the player ratings from the quarter final second leg:

Real Madrid

Keylor Navas – 6/10

Navas did not have a lot to do in terms of shot stopping and did almost everything right and cannot be blamed for not saving a penalty.

Daniel Carvajal – 7/10

Carvajal seemed to be Madrid’s weak point in the first half and allowed Bayern a lot of joy down their left flank. However he became much better defensively in the second half and offered much more going forward. Overall it was a very good performance from the Spanish international.

Sergio Ramos – 6/10

Ramos defended well and couldn’t do anything about the penalty. But he was sometimes exploited by Lewandowski and runners from midfield, His hesitancy to clear saw him score an own goal which could have cost his team the tie, luckily his team went through.

Nacho Fernandez – 7/10

Nacho defended very well in a huge game for the defender. It was an impressive performance where he did very little wrong.

Marcelo – 9/10

This was an absolutely monstrous performance from the full back. The Brazilian nullified the threat from Robben and Lahm completely. He rounded off the magnificent performance with an assist for Ronaldo’s third goal after a great run from deep.

Casemiro – 5/10

Casemiro committed lots of fouls and was very lucky not to be sent off similarly to Vidal. Despite setting up Ronaldo’s first goal, he was Madrid’s worst performer on the night.

Luka Modric – 6/10

The midfielder used his feet well and helped Madrid tick, not very spectacular, but it was a solid performance from the Croatian.

Toni Kroos – 7/10

The German missed a couple of great opportunities in good positions, but created many chances for his team-mates. He as usual, always looked dangerous going forward.

Isco – 6/10

One of Madrid’s most dangerous players in the first half, trying to get the ball forward as early and as often as possible. However he and his team did not offer much going forward early in the second half and he was eventually substituted.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 10/10

Ronaldo worked extremely hard and was involved in some great build up, but had a hard time in front of goal in the first half. He then moved into a central positon and flourished. He scored a great header for the equaliser before the tie went to extra time.

In extra time then he found himself in acres of space to score his second on the night with a left footed volley. He then completed a perfect hat-trick with a right footed tap in, which was his 100th Champions League goal. This was a 10/10 performance from the Ballon D’or winner.

Karim Benzema – 6/10

Some great runs helped make space for his team mates along with some great running to help press the Bayern defence in the first half. He struggled in the second half as he seemed to tire and never looked like scoring.

Substitutions:

Asensio put in another superb performance from the bench

Marco Asensio – 7/10

Asensio put in another superb performance from the bench and provided more of a threat than Isco. His solo goal to seal the 4-2 win was outstanding.

Lucas Vazquez – 6/10

Vazquez missed a great opportunity on the volley to finish the tie in 90 mins which was disappointing. But he put in some very good crosses however in extra time and proved to be a threat.

Mateo Kovacic – N/A

Had very little time to make an impact in extra time.

Bayern Munich

Hummels put in a very solid defensive performance for 90 minutes

Manuel Neuer – 6/10

He could do very little about all four goals and made a couple of very nice saves in extra time.

Phillip Lahm – 5/10

Lahm struggled to contain Marcelo as the Brazilian often found himself overlapping the full back and finding dangerous positions. He also offered very little going forward surprisingly in what was a poor game for the Bayern captain.

Jerome Boateng – 7/10

The German defended well and did very little wrong in the first 90 but he struggled to deal with Ronaldo when the latter played as a number nine.

Mats Hummels – 7/10

Hummels put in a very solid defensive performance for 90 minutes but found it hard in extra time with 10 men and was left for dead for Marco Asensio’s goal.

David Alaba – 6/10

Dealt with Ronaldo well from the wing and did okay getting forward but didn’t have much of an impact in the second half.

Arturo Vidal – 4/10

Vidal was always a threat in attack from deep and received a harsh second yellow for a good tackle. But he cost his side the tie due to his rash tackles in general which left him on his last warning.

Thiago Alcantara – 6/10

One of his poorer performances, did the simple things well but didn’t particularly control the ball as he usually does.

Xabi Alonso – 5/10

Struggled to have any influence, a lot of cross field passes failing to come off. A poor return to the Bernabeu for the Spaniard was a disappointing end to his fantastic Champions League career.

Arjen Robben – 6/10

The Dutchman earned his side a penalty but struggled to have a massive involvement otherwise due to a great performance from Marcelo.

Franck Ribery – 7/10

The Frenchman looked fresh and energetic, showed great feet and caused Carvajal problems throughout the first half. He was eventually subbed but put in a good performance overall.

The Pole was calm and collected over his penalty which gave his side the lead

Robert Lewandowski – 6/10

The Pole was calm and collected over his penalty which gave his side the lead and he came deep to do some defensive duties but his link up was not as good as it usually is.

Substitutions:

Douglas Costa - 6/10

Costa tried his best on the counter attack in extra time but found it difficult due to Madrid having a numerical advantage.

Thomas Muller - 5/10

It was hard for attacking players to have an impact when the team went down to 10 men, therefore Muller struggled to have any involvement.

Joshua Kimmich– 5/10

Being down to 10 men he found it difficult to have an impact as Madrid saw much more of the ball.
