Defending their Champions League title, Inter Milan collapsed to a 2-5 defeat against rampant Schalke 04 while Real Madrid thrash Tottenham Hotspurs by 4-0 goals in the first leg of the quarter final of the UEFA Champions League.

Playing host to the German side at San Siro on Tuesday night, Inter now face a certain elimination from the Champions League unless a win by a 4 goal margin in the second leg save them which is quite unlikely to happen.

It all started well for Inter, when Dejan Stankovic scored from the mid-field in the very 1st minute after Schalke goalkeeper Manuel Neuer came out off his line to clear from Milito.

The German side struck back through Joel Matip in the 17th minute when a shot from Kyriakos Papadopoulos’s was saved by Julio Cesar to find Matip who just tapped the ball into the net.

In the 34th minute, Diego Milito scored his first Champion League goal of the season through a Cambiasso pass beating Neur with a great left-foot finish.

It took Schalke just six minutes to level the score when Edu netted the ball home in his second attempt after his first shot was saved by the veteran Brazilian manning the goal for Inter.

Going into the break with a 2-2 score line, Inter made an electrifying start to the second half. Milito and Eto’o failed to convert a clear chance which would have otherwise produced a different score line.

Schalke made the most of the let off when Raul Gonzalez scored his 70th Champions League goal 8 minutes into the second half.

Disaster struck the home team four minutes later when Ranocchia scored an own goal from a Jose Manuel Jurado low cross.

To add to the injury, Schalke drew the last blood in the 75th minute through Edu, sparking a mass departure of Inter fans.
