Chelsea 6-0 Wolves - Match Report

Chelsea massacred a sorry Wolves side as they breezed through to the next round of the Capital One cup.

Goals from Gary Cahill, Ryan Bertrand and Juan Mata got the Blues off to a flying start before Oriol Romeu and Victor Moses grabbed their first Chelsea goals either side of a Fernando Torres header.

David Davis and Slawomir Peszko missed opportunities for the visitors but in truth, Chelsea were deserving of the mammoth scoreline.

Roberto Di Matteo opted for a youthful approach to this encounter, by handing starts to Ryan Bertrand, Oriol Romeu, Lucas Piazon and Victor Moses. There was also a debut for Cesar Azpilicueta as Chelsea made a total of seven changes to the starting 11 that defeated Stoke 1-0 on Saturday. Wolves boss Stale Solbakken rested a total of ten players from their starting line up that faced Peterborough at the weekend.

John Terry, who had been attending meetings with the FA over a misconduct charge just a day after retiring from international duty, started in central defence alongside his England counterpart Gary Cahill and it was the former Bolton man who got the home side off to a flying start after just 4 minutes.

The visitors concentration lapsed early as Cahill was allowed to get on the end of a Juan Mata set piece and head the Blues in front. Things only got worse for Wolves from then on.

Three of Chelsea’s impressive youngsters combined well for the second goal which came just three minutes after Cahill’s opener. Oriol Romeu’s initial shot was parried only for Chelsea’s 2011/2012 Young Player of the Year Lucas Piazon to pick the ball up again and tee up Ryan Bertrand to fire into the top corner.

Anything the youngsters could do however, it seemed that the more experienced players of the team could do as well. Juan Mata played exquisite one-two passes with first Ramires, and then Spanish counterpart Fernando Torres before finishing well.

Wolves had their moments however as Chelsea keeper Ross Turnbull had to be alert to safely tip David Davis’s header over the bar. Slawomir Peszko also missed a great chance for the visitors, firing into the side netting after he’d rounded Turnbull.

The hosts really began to turn the screw in the second half and looked as though they really wanted to embarrass Wolves and on reflection they did in the end.

Their positive momentum from the first half was carried over and it was not long before Wolves keeper Dorus de Vries had sent the energetic Victor Moses crashing to the turf with a clumsy challenge. Romeu stepped up to smash home his first goal for the Blues since moving from Barcelona.

It was then the turn of Fernando Torres to heap more embarrassment on Wolves as he powered home a Mata corner on 58 minutes. The Spaniard, who has come under criticism since his public display of disappointment against QPR, put in a good shift tonight and worked hard for his team it must be said.

There was still time for Chelsea to grab one more before the final whistle, Moses who was impressive throughout rose unmarked in the Wolves penalty area to head home a cross from substitute Oscar.

In truth, this match will have seemed like a training game to Chelsea. Wolves posed very little threat and the home defence enjoyed a relatively quiet evening. It was a great platform for the club’s youngsters to make a lasting impression on Di Matteo and they certainly will have done that. Chelsea fans can be extremely optimistic with what the future holds in terms of rising talent.

The Blues sail through to the 4th round of the competition and will be brimming with confidence heading in to their Saturday lunchtime clash at the Emirates with Arsenal.
