Chelsea assistant coach Ray Wilkins blames Roman Abramovich for England's poor fortunes at international level

Roman hurts English Football

Ray Wilkins, a former English football player and Chelsea assistant coach, has blamed Roman Abramovich of hurting England’s chances in the international arena.

Ray said: “As far as our product, he’s changed it for the better. For our England team, for the worse. Unfortunately, the influx of foreign players over the last 10 years has been such that our young players are not getting an opportunity.”

After buying Chelsea Football Club in 2003, Abramovich has spent loads of money in importing foreign players for his club. This policy is now being employed by other clubs after seeing the success it has had. But Ray seems to believe that it has its adverse effects and England is at the receiving end as their young players do not get enough chances at the top level.

He added: “We’re seeing it slip right the way through the ranks, not just the first team and Under-21s. We now see the Under-20s being kicked out by Egypt, Iraq and Chile in their group. They should be qualifying from that group.”

Wilkins believes the problem is deeply rooted, and England might have to suffer for years to come.
