Chelsea face financial loss after UCL debacle

Chelsea is reported to lose £20 million in income compared to last year after their first round exit at the UEFA Champions League this year.

The defending champions were knocked out of UCL after Juventus got their much needed result with Shakhtar Donetsk on the final day of the group stage matches.

Their champions League victory against Bayern Munich netted an income of £48.6 million including sponsorship and media deals, turning out to be their first profit, since Roman Abramovich took over the club in 2003.

They have been demoted to play in the Europa League, which will make TV viewership drop by one third of the previous year.

This loss could trouble the Blues in complying with the UEFA’s forthcoming Financial Fair Play regulations, which says clubs should at least break even.
