Rumour: Chelsea on high alert as target fails to sign new deal

Porto's Jackson celebrates his goal against Olhanense during their Portuguese Premier League soccer match at Dragao stadium in Porto

Chelsea have been put on alert by the news that Porto’s lethal striker Jackson Martinez has failed to make an agreement with the club over a new contract, report TalkSport.

The 27-year-old has confirmed that his contract talks have broken down, signalling an end to his time at the club may be near.

The Colombian has scored 47 times in 65 games since signing for the Portuguese giants for £7.7 million last year. His current deal runs out in 2016 so Porto are keen to extend his deal to tie him down and prevent losing him to one of Europe’s bigger clubs.

Jose Mourinho’s strikers have struggled to score this season and the Portuguese coach is known to be an admirer of Martinez, who he may be tempted to sign in January to solve their goal-scoring problems.

When asked whether his contract talks with the club had stopped, he told O Jogo: “Yes. The club has the issue – I will only give my maximum and not look to hasten things, because they will happen in due time.

“For now I do not feel the need to talk with FC Porto. I am calm.”
