A year-old photo of late Shawn Kuykendall waiting to be taken down to the emergency room after receiving a PET scan at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital on Friday, November 15, 2013.
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is not as cold-hearted as people perceive him to be, and his touching message to the family of former MLS player Shawn Kuykendall is an evidence to that.
Shawn Kuykendall, a former New York Red Bulls player was diagnosed with an advanced and incurable form of thymus cancer last year, and tragically died after a yearlong battle disease on March 12, 2014.
Kuykendall is known to be a Chelsea enthusiast, and upon discovering his story, Mourinho decided to leave his family a note which was later shared on Kuykenstrong, a foundation Kuykendall started upon discovering that he had cancer.
The letter was hand signed by Mourinho, and read:
“Dear Mr. and Mrs. Kuykendall,
I was deeply saddened to hear of your son’s passing. I can only imagine the grief of a parent losing a child and my heart goes out to you both.
I hope you and your family find great strength in the shared memories of Shawn’s life at this toughest of times and also in the future.
The football family has lost a fine young man, and everyone’s thoughts at Chelsea FC are with you, your family and Shawn’s friends.
With much sympathy,
Yours sincerely,
Jose Mourinho”
What a gesture!
