Very few players have made the step up from the youth and reserve team into the Chelsea first-team in the last decade. Nathaniel Chalobah is one of them, and he has been very close to the first-team in the last year or so. Chalobah has now signed a new five-year contract with Chelsea that will keep him at the club until 2018.

He spent the last season on loan at Championship club Watford, who are under the management of Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola, making 42 appearances in all competitions.

“It is great for me that Chelsea are willing to give me such a long contract, it is a big confidence boost.”

“I think I have developed a lot as a player but I know I must continue to improve to earn a place in the Chelsea team and with my future settled, I can concentrate on doing that.” said Chalobah.

Chalobah is capable of playing as a central defender or defensive midfielder. Now that he has signed a long-term contract, I just hope he does not go out on loan. Manchester United do not have a problem with having 20-year-old’s in their squad and there is no reason why Chelsea can not do the same.

“He’s a very, very good player and I like him very, very much. I am very impressed. For sure he is a Chelsea player.” said Blues manager Jose Mourinho.

Chalobah won the Football League’s Young Player of the Month award for April.
