Reports: Chelsea set to make stunning move to re-sign former player

Huddersfield Town v Chelsea - Premier League
Antonio Conte is desperate to strengthen his striking department

What's the story?

It has been very clear from many days that Antonio Conte has not been happy with the transfer activity carried out by the Chelsea board in the summer transfer window. However, things seem to be looking up for the Italian tactician.

After reports emerged that Conte was close to completing the signing of Alex Sandro, sensational reports in Daily Mail claim that the Premier League champions are looking at a possible move for former striker Daniel Sturridge in the January transfer window.

With Batshuayi struggling, Morata is currently overworked and the Italian is desperate to add some strike-power to his side. Sturridge along with Aubameyang, Benteke and Belotti are said to be on the Italian's shortlist for the January transfer window.

Liverpool FC v NK Maribor - UEFA Champions League
Sturridge has struggled for regular playing time under Jurgen Klopp this season

Daniel Sturridge spent four fruitful years (2009-2013) at Chelsea before making the move to Liverpool. His Liverpool career started off in blistering fashion as he formed a potent strike partnership with Luis Suarez.

However, the England international has struggled with plenty of injuries since 2015 and this has seen his playing time being restricted severely at Liverpool. With the 2018 World Cup coming up, the 28-year-old is desperate for some regular playing time and is reportedly open for a move away from Anfield in the January transfer window.

The heart of the matter

Michy Batshuayi's career at Chelsea seems all but over at the moment and with Morata shouldering an immense workload, the arrival of a quality striker like Sturridge will definitely add an extra zip and incisiveness to the Blues' attack.

However, Sturridge has also been linked with a move to LaLiga in January and unless he is assured if regular playing time at Stamford Bridge, the move is unlikely to come to fruition. Conte meanwhile is determined to add some more bodies in January and is pretty confident of sealing a deal for either Sturridge, Benteke, Bellotti or Aubameyang in the winter transfer window.

Author's take

With Jurgen Klopp preferring to start Firmino and even Dominic Solanke over Sturridge, the 28-year-old definitely needs to move in January if he wants to get some regular playing time and make the 2018 England World Cup squad.

However, a move to LaLiga might be better for the talented forward as he could again struggle to get regular playing time if he does indeed end up making the controversial move back to Chelsea.
