Chelsea have confirmed the signing of midfielder Cristian Cuevas from Chilean club O’Higgins’. The 18-year-old who had played in four of Chile’s five games in the U20 World Cup this summer in Turkey, impressed the Chelsea coaches in a trial at Stamford Bridge last year.
Cuevas, who can play at left-back or on the left wing, has signed a 5-year deal that will ensure he stays at the Bridge till 2018.
The Chilean Under-20 international said: “I’m very happy. Chelsea were following me for more than a year. What I wanted happened, which was joining this club.”
While the exact transfer fee is undisclosed, reports suggest Chelsea offered an initial $2.6 million (£ 2.2 million) for the player but O’Higgins demanded $4 million (£3.4 million) before finalising a deal.
