Contrary to recent speculation, Wolfsburg sports director Klaus Allofs has dismissed talk of Arsenal and Chelsea target Mario Mandzukic returning to his former club, report The Mirror. The news may give Arsenal and Chelsea a boost, seeing they reportedly want the player.

Reports surfaced this week that Wolfsburg were in discussion with the Bayern Munich centre forward over a proposed move to the Volkswagen Arena.

The Croatian forward looks set to leave the Bundesliga champions this transfer window, owing the the imminent arrival of Borussia Dortmund’s Robert Lewandowski.

Mandzukic has already expressed his intention to find a new club this summer, although that new club won’t be Wolfsburg.

Allofs rubbished the media claims in an interview with Sport1 television, stating that no contact had been made with the player.

“It’s just a false announcement, there is no truth to it in the slightest,” Allofs told Sport1 television.

“I think our board of directors have already said what needs to be said about it: we have not had any contact with the player.”

Allofs did, however, admit that The Wolves were in the market for a new striker, in addition to Aaron Hunt who signed from Werder Bremen last month.

“We are looking around for a new forward,” added Allofs.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are among a plethora of Premier League clubs rumoured to be keeping tabs on Mandzukic, as they look to bolster a front line that that flattered to deceive last season.
