Most pundits didn’t give Genk much hope troubling Chelsea tonight, and with less ten minutes on the clock, their pessimism was justified and an onslaught ensured.
Raul Meireles, returning to the staring lineup tonight with Torres, Malouda, Anelka and Romeu, was allowed the freedom of the bridge in the centre of the field and duly dispatched his 25 yard shot to the bottom left corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
It didn’t stay 1-0 for long though, as Torres, who earlier hit the post, was played in by Lampard with a delightful throughball and opened his body up to curl his shot around the keeper for a 2-0 result after 11 minutes.
There was more to come from the much maligned Spaniard as a cross from Bosingwa was met with a powerful header from around 8-10 yards and Torres had his second. This goal was as good as the first, if not better, as his glancing heade needed the right amount of touch and power to find the goal.
The fourth goal came from another cross, this time from Malouda to Ivanovic and Chelsea went into half time 4-0 up.
We had to wait 27 minutes for the 5th and unfortunately for El Niño it wasn’t his hat-trick goal. The striker had a good shot saved by the Genk keeper and saw the ball rebound back to an unmarked Saloman Kalou who dispatched from 4 yards. Game over.
