Copa America 2011: Brazil vs Ecuador Preview

Copa America 2011 Group BBrazil vs EcuadorVenue: CordobaDate: July 14 Time: 06:15 AM (IST)

Brazil takes on Ecuador later tonight in their final Group B game in the Copa America 2011 at Cordoba, with Mano Menezes’ side desperate to pick up their first win in the competition. With both teams still not fully confident about qualification to the next round, Brazil and Ecuador will fight hard against each other to record nothing but a victory.

A victory for Brazil would mean them topping the group provided Paraguay beat Venezuela or will have to remain in the second place if Venezuela gets a favorable result. However if both the match ends in a draw, both Brazil and Paraguay will earn their Quarter Final berth with three points each. One of them will qualify by virtue of the second best third place team. The first third place team quota has already been booked by Peru.

Meanwhile group A third place team Costa Rica, still in contention for the next round can make it only if Venezuela defeats Paraguay. The situation however is tougher for Ecuador as they desperately need a win to go through to the next round unlike the other three teams, who would qualify even if they come up with a draw. With all these complex permutation and combination in place, a clear victory would only mean a clear qualification for all. So a tough match is expected.

Mano Menezes looks set to call on his strongest side for the important clash against La Tri. The Selecao coach started with Jadson ahead of Robinho against Paraguay, yet it is unknown if he will follow the same route. Tottenham midfielder Sandro has also withdrawn from the squad, citing a knee injury. Having seen rivals Argentina qualify in their final group game, the five-time world champions know that only a much-improved display will see them progress.

Meanwhile Reinaldo Rueda is again without Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia, who picked up an ankle injury in the first match against Paraguay and the coach, has maintained that he will not be risked. Otherwise, Ecuador remains unchanged.

With Ecuador defeating Brazil only once in their last seven encounters, it’s unlikely that they can overcome the five times world champions tonight. However off late Ecuador had been doing well and have tied their last six games. With Brazil not in the best of form, Ecuador may sprang up some surprise to move ahead.
