Cristiano Ronaldo: I Could Have Joined Manchester City

"20 million a year is no joke folks!"

Cristiano Ronaldo has risked the wrath of Manchester United supporters by claiming that City would have been his destination if in case Jose Mourinho left Madrid at the end of last season. The former Man United winger left Old Trafford to join Real Madrid in a gigantic transfer two years ago but nonetheless, he has found success hard to come by over there with the Copa del Rey title being his only team success so far.

Manuel Pellegrini was the man at helm when Ronaldo first joined but after an unfruitful season by their standards, Mourinho was drafted in due to his imminent success in the Champions League- a tournament that was staining their evergreen reputation at that time. The ‘Special One’ proved to be hugely popular with Los Blancos, guiding them to the Copa del Rey title, a win that was even more significant due to the fact that Barcelona were their opponents in the final. Ronaldo too was nothing short of sensational as he beat Lionel Messi to the Pichichi by scoring a massive 40 La Liga goals.

However, speculations were hot over a possible return to Chelsea for Jose Mourinho, especially after his odd antics against Barcelona last season. Having said that, Mourinho decided to stay with the Spanish giants, prompting Ronaldo’s decision to stay with Los Merengues. Nevertheless, Ronaldo confirmed that City would have been his new home, had Mourinho left the Bernabeu in favour of a return to Chelsea.

“I think if I went from Spain it would be to the Premier League – but not now. If I went back to the Premier League it would have to be with a club in the north west. I don’t like London.

“It’s flattering to be offered like £20 million a year – it’s very good, but I spoke to my agent and I think it’s better to stay in Madrid because this year we’re going to be the best. This season we are going to be a big force.

“Jose Mourinho is staying at Madrid so I stay. If he went to Chelsea then I would have left. I would have gone to Manchester City. But now he’s staying, I’m staying.”

Reports midway through last season claimed a feud between Ronaldo and Mourinho but the Portuguese wing-wizard has confirmed that things are flowing well between him and the Madrid supremo.

“We went to a wedding together last week and we’re on good terms and we have the same agent. He [Mourinho] is a nice person and we live in the same street.”

Ronaldo’s statement is likely to raise rave reviews from United faithfuls, especially with them still holding the winger in high regards despite his ill-fated departure to Madrid two years ago.
