What is the story?

Bianconeri ace, Cristiano Ronaldo, is the most wasteful player of the season in Serie A at the moment, despite winning the Most Valuable Player of the year award.

A newly revealed statistical data showed that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner has missed the most number of big chances in the 2018-19 season of the Serie A so far.

In case you didn’t know….

Cristiano Ronaldo played a key role in Juventus’ eighth successive Scudetto this season. The Portuguese ace racked up as many as 21 goals in 31 appearances this season and provided 11 assists to his teammates.

He also bailed out the Old Lady several times during the course of the campaign and deservedly won the Most Valuable Player award.

The five-time Champions League winner faced criticism from a section of the Juve faithful as well as football pundits because he failed to inspire Juventus to their first Champions League crown since 1996.

Ronaldo's 6-goal contribution was in vain as Juve crashed out in the quarterfinal stage of Europe’s elite competition at the hands of Ajax. Another failure in the Champions League, in turn, cost Allegri his job, as Juve announced his departure last Friday.

In Coppa Italia, Juventus also suffered an embarrassing elimination in the quarterfinal stage, as they were thrashed 3-0 by Atalanta. Ronaldo failed to score despite playing 2 games in the knockout cup competition.

The heart of the matter…

A recently released statistical data from Opta (via Fox Sports Asia) showed that Ronaldo is topping the list of big chances missed, with 16 misses during the course of the campaign so far.

However, Ronaldo averaged 5.7 shots with 1.6 key passes per game and also completed 69 dribbles across all competitions.

There is a tie between Mauro Icardi of Inter Milan and Ciro Immobile of Lazio for the second spot, with 15 missed chances each in Serie A this season so far.

What’s next?

Ronaldo and Juventus will face Sampdoria on Sunday in the final matchday of Serie A 2018-19.
