Crystal Palace take on Newcastle United in a Premier League match at Selhurst Park this Saturday. Palace have endured a tough start to their 2024-25 campaign, and currently sit in 19th place, one off the bottom of the table.
Newcastle, meanwhile, have enjoyed mixed fortunes, which explains their current mid-table position of 10th.
Can Palace pick up some valuable points this weekend or will Newcastle condemn them to more danger?
Crystal Palace vs Newcastle United Head-to-Head and Key Numbers
- The last time Newcastle visited Selhurst Park, they were comfortably beaten by their hosts 2-0. The win was part of Oliver Glasner's hot streak to begin his tenure at Crystal Palace, as he ended the 2023-24 campaign with six wins in the final seven games of the season.
- Newcastle have not beaten Crystal Palace away since a 0-2 win in November 2020. Their record there is not terrible, though, as four of their last six visits to Selhurst Park have ended in draws.
- Crystal Palace have endured a horrible start to the current campaign, winning just one of their opening 12 matches. Since that victory over Tottenham, they have only claimed two points from a possible nine, although they were unlucky not to defeat Aston Villa last weekend.
- Newcastle have been one of the Premier League's more inconsistent outfits this season. Eddie Howe's men have won five, drawn three and lost four of their first 12, and after impressive back-to-back wins over Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, they stunk out the joint in Monday's home defeat to West Ham.
- Perhaps the most disappointing thing about Newcastle's campaign thus far has been their lack of goals. The Magpies have only scored 13, the lowest total in the top half. They have only scored three more goals than Crystal Palace, despite sitting nine spots above them in the table.
Crystal Palace vs Newcastle United Prediction
Newcastle were pretty awful in their loss to West Ham, but this could be a good game for them to bounce back with.
Crystal Palace do have players with a lot of ability, and their form has improved slightly in recent weeks. However, they are likely to be without key men Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton here, at least from the start, which brings their threat level down substantially.
To add to this, while Newcastle have struggled for goals, they have been relatively solid in defense - West Ham game notwithstanding - meaning they could be difficult to break down.
Overall, Crystal Palace have only won one game this season to date, and it's unlikely that will change here. The prediction, then, is a tight win for the away side.
Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-2 Newcastle United
