Debate: Does Gary Cahill deserve to start week in, week out?

Gary Cahill, in my eyes, is now pushing for a regular first team start at Chelsea ahead of David Luiz and that’s nothing against Luiz, but because of the progress I feel Cahill has made at the club since he came here.

Cahill has always been a good defender but his development here has gone almost unnoticed. Cahill strikes me as one of the old school centre halves that lives for a clean sheet week in, week out. You see his delight during games when a save is made or a block tackle and you see his disappointment when we concede a single goal.

I believe Cahill could become our Captain in the years to come and although he hasn’t come through the ranks at the club like John Terry, he could have the same influence here eventually.

If Chelsea can get Cahill and Terry fit and playing together, we could end up with the same partnership at the back as we had with JT and Carvalho back in the day. A return to having the best defensive record could be on the cards once more.

Both are of the same mould and would throw everything at the ball to stop the opposition and that is very rare these days.

As you can tell, I personally really rate Cahill and for me, he should now be selected to start week in, week out no matter who is playing next to him.

Do you think Gary Cahill should start week in, week out?
