DFB Cup: A typical German Cup Sunday of upsets and surprises

The first round of the German Cup (DFB Pokal) is being held over this weekend, having started on Friday and ending tomorrow with the charm being that smaller amateur sides can challenge, even beat Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga sides.

On Friday, 3.Liga side VfL Osnabrück beat FC Erzgebirge Aue convincingly 3-0, otherwise until Saturday evening no lower tier club could upset a top level club. But on Sunday numerous Bundesliga and 2.Bundesliga sides had to pack their bags and go home knowing that the German Cup 2013/14 is over for them. For a number of Bundesliga/2.Bundesliga clubs, it was their first and last match in this competition this season.

Bundesliga newcomers Eintracht Braunschweig were beaten 2-1 by promoted 2.Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld, Werder Bremen lost 1-3 after extra-time against 3.Liga side 1.FC Saarbrücken, while SV Darmstadt 98 beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 5-4 on penalties.

In the late match, another 2.Bundesliga side in SV Sandhausen beat 1.FC Nürnberg 4-3 on penalties.

But also two 2.Bundesliga sides were thrown out of the competition. Fortuna Düsseldorf were beaten 1-0 by SC Wiedenbrück due to an injury-time penalty, while Preussen Münster upset FC St.Pauli 1-0 to continue their recent upsets in the German Cup.

Tomorrow there are four matches to be played with the final one pitting Regionalliga (fourth division) side BSV SW Rehden against defending champions FC Bayern Munich.
