Didier Drogba could return to Chelsea as a player-coach for the 2014/15 season

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba is set to return to the club on a one-year contract as a player-coach.

According to L’Equipe, the Ivory Coast international could join as early as next week.

Drogba first joined the Blues in 2004 and spent 8 years in West London, leaving the club in 2012 after winning their first Champions League trophy. The 36-year-old striker’s 18-month contract with Galatasaray expired at the end of the season.

He is expected to play for the club for one season as well as join coach Jose Mourinho’s coaching staff.

Chelsea are in need of a striker after Demba Ba joined Besiktas and Samuel Eto’o was released at the end of the season. And there are reports of Fernando Torres possibly returning to Spain to join his boyhood club Atletico Madrid.

Drogba has scored 20 goals for Galatasaray in 53 appearances in the past one-and-a-half seasons. He had earlier had a stint at Shanghai Shenhua which saw him score 8 goals in 11 appearances.
