Does Mourinho want to solve the Torres conundrum?

Manchester City v Chelsea - Premier League

As the transfer season rumbles on, the speculation regarding Fernando Torres’ future at Chelsea seems to be intensifying. At this present point in time, it seems as though the Spaniard is being eased towards the exit door in order to make way for a new striker.

Who the new star striker will be for the Blues is up in the air at the time of writing but one thing is for sure, Jose Mourinho is not convinced that Torres is good enough for his second ‘Special’ era.

The 29-year-old has flattered to deceive since his £50million move to Stamford Bridge in 2011, despite being part of a Chelsea team which has won the FA Cup, Champions League, and Europa League in his time in West London.

A look at his stats from last season would tell you the former Atletico Madrid hitman had a decent campaign, scoring 23 goals in 65 appearances, according to betfair.com online.

However, whoever said football isn’t played on paper would rightly point to Torres’ lacklustre performances on the pitch. As an indicator, he has lost that spark which made him one of the deadliest strikers in the world at one time.

Interim boss, Rafael Benitez, was convinced he could restore the Spaniard to his former glory but failed on that account.

Now it is Mourinho’s turn to see if he can bring back the Torres of old. The Portuguese coach has hinted that he has been less than impressed by Torres since he joined the Blues and may feel he is wasting his and the club’s time by putting his effort into trying to get him back to his best.

Torres has the makings of the kind of player Mourinho loves, in terms of the fact that he can be quick, powerful, and a game changer. However, he has not shown any of those attributes recently and, with plenty of world-class strikers desperate to work with Mourinho, it could be time for El Nino to move on.
