Don't be surprised at the hostile reception for Benitez

As you can imagine, a lot has been made of the Chelsea fans’ reaction to the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo and the appointment of Rafa Benitez yesterday at the game and it’s hardly surprising.

Chelsea fans do not like Benitez and probably never will and made their feelings known and in my view, rightly so.

I wrote a post last week asking for the ‘boo boys’ to think of the team and not to boo as it could affect the players on the pitch but seeing Rafa sitting there, in our dugout, I couldn’t help but to boo him too!

The thing is, people I speak to and pundits have said that for Abramovich, Chelsea is just a play thing, his toy and with it, he can do what he wants and to that, I just want to point a couple of things out here.

Firstly, from his point of view, he has been there and done it before and got the maximum result from his decisions. Chelsea have won everything in our game and of that, there is no argument.

Secondly however, I would like to point out something that was made more than clear yesterday. It’s all well and good being the owner of the football club but the club needs the fans. If Chelsea fans were to boycott the next two or three games for example (which would never happen) and only the away fans were in the ground, it would hit the club’s finances and create a real problem.

I am not saying this is something that the fans will do or should do at all here. If anything, the fact that this is our club and all we care about is Chelsea FC is evident throughout the support in the stands.

The point I am trying to make is that it’s important here that Roman and the board take note of the feelings of the supporters towards Benitez as it’s obvious that was never the case when the appointment was made.

We love and support our club through thick and thin, from as early as we can remember until the day we die and part with OUR money for every game in every season. Sometimes things get to a point where the ONLY way to get your message across is to do what we did yesterday.

The Chelsea fans are just as important to the club as everyone else.

As for Rafa, he claims that by winning games he will win the fans over by the end of the season. All I will say to that is:

It doesn’t matter. You’re not wanted here!
