English Premier League: Chelsea thrash Wigan 8-0 to clinch league title, Drogba takes Golden Boot.

Chelsea had to win against Wigan to lift the league title and they did that in style. Under manager Carlo Ancelotti, a mature Chelsea team, overcame initial jitters to become champions in England. Leading upto the game, Chelsea had a point lead against defending Champions Manchester United. Manchester United were playing Stoke at the other end and managed a comfortable win. However, this had no effect on the overall result as Chelsea did not open the door for them to walk in.

Chelsea had everything going for them as they denied any consolation to rivals Manchester United. Didier Drogba who was tied on goals with United star striker Wayne Rooney with 26 goals edged past him to win the Golden boot.

Lampard and Drogba had a small tiff but they went past it to do the job.

Drogba, however, was causing fumes in the Chelsea camp as he insisted on taking a penalty ahead of the team’s specialist Frank Lampard. Lampard was seen in an understandably emotional talk as he himself stepped up to take the penalty. As it happened, Drogba later got his chances and converted them to win the prestigious award. In the post-match presentation, Drogba admitted that he was being selfish and un-professional in asking Frank Lampard to step aside.

This is Chelsea’s first title under manager Carlo Ancellotti and their first after Mourinho’s departure. Lampard described Ancelotti as “more calm” in comparison to the “special one”. This league win ends Manchester United’s title streak.

Chelsea who are full of players edging the retirement age might look to fill in a couple of young players in the off-season. Ancelotti is likely to retain his job and will aim higher in the next season. With their dream of lifting the Champion’s League still not realized, owner Abramovich will have clear instructions for the manager.
