EPL 2017/18: Liverpool 4-3 Manchester City; Player ratings

Liverpool v Manchester City - Premier League
Liverpool brought an end to Manchester City's undefeated run in the Premier League

Sunday's blockbuster clash between Liverpool and Manchester City served up to its billing as Liverpool ended Manchester City's winning streak after securing a 4-3 win at Anfield.

The first half was an evenly contested one where both sides had chances to inflict damage on the other. Liverpool took the lead in the 9th minute after Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain saw his low, powerful drive end up at the back of the net, beating a hapless Ederson. City equalised in the 40th minute when Leroy Sane beat Loris Karius on his near post.

Liverpool regained the lead in the second half when Roberto Firmino chipped the ball over Ederson for his side's second. The Reds got their third just after two minutes when Sadio Mane's left-footed piledriver ended up in the top corner leaving City's keeper with no chance. Mohamed Salah scored Liverpool's fourth with a perfectly lobbed shot after Ederson's poor clearance.

The leaders hit back with two goals from Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan in the 84th and 91st minute respectively, setting up a frantic end to the game.

Here's a look at how the players fared during the game.

Liverpool players celebrate after Mane made the score 3-1

Loris Karius - 4/10

The German squandered a perfect chance to stake his claim for the number one spot with a shaky performance. Karius should have done much better in keeping out City's equaliser in the first half.

Joe Gomez - 5/10

Gomez came up against a formidable winger in Leroy Sane and was punished in the first half for his sloppy positioning. The English international improved as the game progressed and would be slightly disappointed after his block fell to Bernardo Silva who slotted in City's third.

Joel Matip - 6/10

Matip kept his calm demeanour and went toe-to-toe with Sergio Aguero, making a number of interceptions in the game until the last ten minutes. There he lost his concentration, resulting in City scoring their second and third goals.

Dejan Lovren - 5/10

Like Matip, Lovren had a solid game until the last few minutes of the game where he failed to take command of the situation which saw City end the game on a high and set up a nervous ending.

Andrew Robertson - 8/10

Robertson was by far the best defender for Liverpool who kept Raheem Sterling in check, preventing him from scoring or assisting against his former team. The Scotland international used his impressive positioning skills to great effect making many vital tackles and interceptions which kept things solid at the back.

Emre Can - 8/10

Emre Can showed in his performance against City, the qualities he brought to this Liverpool side: physicality, steel and grit. Can shielded the back four and broke up a number of City's attacking moves. He was seen making tackles and regaining possession in vital areas of the pitch. The German international was taken off in the 70th minute which resulted in Liverpool's midfield losing its shape during the ending moments of the game.

Georginio Wijnaldum - 6/10

Gini Wijnaldum did very well to keep the likes of De Bruyne from threatening and initiated a number of counter-attacking moves. The only concern for Wijnaldum in today's display was his decision making which resulted in possession being lost in the final third.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain - 8/10

A stunning performance from Oxlade-Chamberlain saw him give his side the lead with a well-placed finish. The former Arsenal man made numerous tackles and took up some great positions to aid the attack. Performances like this on a consistent basis could make 'the Ox' an important player in the Liverpool squad.

Sadio Mane - 8/10

Mane made a slow start to the game, but troubled City's defence with his smart runs as the game progressed. He scored Liverpool's third after seeing his piledriver end up in the top left corner. The Senegalese international would be slightly upset for not increasing his goals tally as his curling effort hit the post and went out.

Mohamed Salah - 9/10

Another game, another goal for the Egyptian. Salah troubled City's defenders with some smart runs in the first half, leaving the likes of Otamendi and Stones in a position of discomfort. His hard work was rewarded with his 18th goal of the season when he perfectly lobbed the ball over Ederson as the goalkeeper made a wayward clearance.

Roberto Firmino - 9/10

A strong performance saw Firmino link up well with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane. The Brazilian showed immense desire in his display and his good work was rewarded with a goal when he won back possession from Stones and delightfully chipped the ball over Ederson.

Substitutions:

James Milner - 4

Milner replaced Emre Can in the 70th minute, but lost possession cheaply and gave away a free kick in a crucial area during the dying seconds of the game for which he was booked.

Adam Lallana - N/A

Lallana replaced Salah in the 87th minute and did not have enough time to showcase his talent.

Ragnar Klavan - N/A

Klavan was thrown in during the ending moments of the game to ensure City don't go on to score the equaliser.

Manchester City

Liverpool v Manchester City - Premier League
City suffered their first Premier League loss of the season.

Ederson - 4/10

Ederson had a torrid time in front of goal as he saw four goals scored past him. His positioning can surely be questioned for the first goal he conceded and a wayward clearance from him saw Mohamed Salah lob the ball over him for Liverpool's fourth.

Kyle Walker - 5/10

Walker started the game in positive fashion, making a number of interceptions and providing the diagonal ball that resulted in City's equaliser. The second half saw Walker's performance deteriorate as he gave away possession cheaply and was often troubled by the pace of Mane.

John Stones - 4/10

Stones was often troubled by the pace and trickery of Liverpool's front three. The English international was easily dispossessed by Firmino who pounced on the mistake to make the score 2-1 in favour of the hosts.

Nicolas Otamendi - 4/10

Otamendi was very uncomfortable while dealing with the pace of Salah. The Argentine was unlucky to see his header hit the bar and his evening got worse when he gave away the ball to Salah during the build-up to Liverpool's third goal.

Fabian Delph - 3/10

Delph started the game in average fashion but had to be withdrawn at the half-hour mark due to injury.

Fernandinho - 4/10

Fernandinho lost possession on numerous occasions and was the culprit for losing the ball to Firmino who assisted Oxlade-Chamberlain for Liverpool's first goal of the evening.

Ilkay Gundogan - 6/10

Gundogan enjoyed a decent game against Liverpool where he performed the basic tasks to great perfection and provided the link between attack and defence. His hard work was awarded when he slotted in City's third, eventually setting up an exciting finish.

Kevin De Bruyne - 5/10

De Bruyne put in a number of teasing crosses that were dealt well by Liverpool's defence. The Belgian's impact wasn't felt in the second half as he was well marshalled by Liverpool's defence.

Raheem Sterling - 4/10

Sterling experienced a torrid time at Anfield as he was constantly dispossessed by Andy Robertson and failed to create any impact for the leaders. He was eventually replaced by Bernardo Silva in the 71st minute.

Leroy Sane - 7/10

Sane was arguably City's best performer against Liverpool. The German international posed problems for the right side of Liverpool's defence and scored the equalising goal when his shot beat Loris Karius on his near post.

Sergio Aguero - 5/10

Aguero looked like an isolated figure for most parts of the game and did not receive enough supply from City's playmakers. The Argentine was well marshalled by Matip who did not allow to have a sniff at goal.

Substitutions:

Danilo - 4/10

Danilo replaced Fabian Delph in the first half. The Brazilian looked vulnerable defensively and was caught ball watching as Firmino's chip hit the post and went over the line. Swifter action could have prevented the ball from crossing the line.

Bernardo Silva - 5/10

Silva replaced Sterling in the second half and scored City's second in the 84th minute. Overall, Silva had a decent outing.
