EPL: 5 Best strike partnerships

Shubham

It must have been a very special day for Manchester United fans all round the globe when they heard of Van Persie’s move to Old Trafford.

Rooney and Van Persie will play together this season and we can only imagine what these 2 star strikers could do to opposition defenses. Last season, Van Persie grabbed 30 goals and claimed the Golden boot while his new teammate Wayne Rooney finished with a career-best 27 goals in Premier League.

As a tribute to the newly born Rooney-Van Persie combination, I managed to shed light on some of the best forward partnerships in Premier League history.

Alan Shearer and Chris Sutton – Blackburn Rovers

In the 1993/1994 season, which featured 42 games, Blackburn Rovers finished 2nd in the league behind Manchester United with 84 points, having scored 63 goals . Alan Shearer alone netted nearly half of those, banking 31 goals. He needed someone to share the attack though. Chris Sutton was the man, and the Alan Shearer-Chris Sutton pair scored 49 goals between them.

Dwight Yorke and Andy Cole – Manchester United

Regarded as the best strike partnership of the Premier League, Newcastle United’s Andy Cole and Aston Villa’s Dwight Yorke looked like a match made in heaven for Man Utd and Sir Alex Ferguson.

The duo played an important role in United’s famous treble-winning campaign and scored 53 goals between the two of them in 1998-1999.

Michael Owen and Emile Heskey – Liverpool

After Liverpool paid Leicester City £11million to bring Emile Heskey to Liverpool, big things were expected of his partnership with Michael Owen.

In the period of 3 (2000-2003) seasons they both played together, Liverpool qualified for Europe every year, managing to win the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League. During that time, this duo scored 105 goals.

Arsenal v Lokomotiv Moscow

Thierry Henry and Dennis Bergkamp – Arsenal

Arsenal’s two most fabulous strikers played with each other for six seasons and scored more than 200 goals in Premier league in those six years. The duo also played an important role in Arsenal’s “Invincible” campaign in 2003-2004.

Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jimmy Hasselbaink - Chelsea

The partnership of Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jimmy Hasselbaink performed brilliantly under Claudio Ranieri, with both contributing to a total of 52 goals in all competitions in the 2001-2002 season.

But unfortunately, their partnership came to an end when Hasselbaink moved to Middlesbrough, while Gudjohnsen moved to Barcelona.
