EPL clubs spent £77million on agents' fees

The Premier League clubs have managed to spend a sum of £77million as the players’ agents fees last season, according to the latest reports released by the Premier League.

The total fees paid to the players’ agents has incresed by £6m as compared to the season before and is an indication that there won’t be any slowing down in this departmet. The worst part about the agents wages is that they have to be paid even if no fees is included in the transfer itself i.e. in the case of a free transfer the buying club doesn’t have to pay anything to another club but still have to pay to the player’s agent.

Manchester City topped the table by forking out £10,537,982.

But even with that bank-busting amount, City — then bossed by Roberto Mancini — managed to finish second behind crowned champions Manchester United.

Liverpool were the second highest spenders on agents, shelling out £8,600,444 in two transfer windows that saw as many as 806 player changing clubs.

Southampton are currently entangled in a row over the agent’s fee demanded to seal Victor Wanyama’s move from Celtic. Saints were at the bottom of the money table, spending a meagre £646,106 for the entire campaign. But Wanyama’s agent is demanding a staggering £1million for the transfer to complete. That is the case when a fee of £12million has already been agreed between the clubs. This has put the move in jeopardy with Saints chairman Nicola Cortese refusing to be bludgeoned into submission. Southampton are furious and fear the player will miss out on a move he wants simply because of his agents’ greed

The table proves that spending money on fees cannot guarantee success or survival.

QPR’s bid to beat the drop ended in disaster despite their agent outlay of £6,818,688 before Harry Redknapp took over as boss. Tottenham’s push to break into the top four saw them fork out around £1m more than Arsenal with an outlay of £6,595,905. But Manchester United showed you do not have to make agents rich to win the title as they paid £3,681,580 in fees.
