Explained: The artistry behind Jorginho's penalties

Chelsea upstaged all odds to send Tottenham Hotspur packing in the Carabao Cup semi-final as they beat their fierce rivals 4-2 on penalties, after the aggregate was tied down to 2-2. Maurizio Sarri's men entered the game by a goal down, having lost out in the first leg. They were also on the back of an underwhelming defeat at Arsenal.

Regardless, the Blues played out of their skins and exhibited an act of sheer dominance and class. With over 22 efforts on goal, and more control, they clearly outplayed their cross-city rivals. Goals from N'Golo Kante and Eden Hazard helped the cause.

Chelsea inflicted a massive penalty shootout defeat to Spurs, who have now won just one out their previous six shootouts. Willian, skipper Cesar Azpilicueta, David Luiz, and Jorginho stepped up from the spot to convert their kicks and send Chelsea to the penultimate final.

And boy, Jorginho stepped up. He came up to take the third kick, with all the pressure on Chelsea because Spurs had converted their first two spot-kicks. But the Italy international had none of it, as he took an easy-looking run up, hopped just before kicking the ball, and then rolled it into the back of the net, much to the embarrassment of Paulo Gazzaniga.

On that note, lets try and break down his technique, approach, and how & why he gets it right almost every time.

Starting off with his run up, the 26-year-old dons a very relaxed physique while approaching the 12-yard mark. He very slowly and cautiously jogs to the spot and more notably, only looks at the keeper's eyeballs.

In football, touch and balance are arguably the most important aspects of a player's game. Regardless of how pacy or crafty a player is, the above two components need to be sharpened with focus. This is what Jorginho exploits to great effect.

He jogs and then hops way above the ground, so much that just a few nano seconds before his kick, the man is not even on ground. The amount of time he takes in the air entices the keeper to choose his side, and going by the theories of biology and human nature, the shot-stopper's ankles go in synchronization with the hands.

This is when the watchful Jorginho, who would be casting a keen eye on the keeper's movement, dispatches the ball into the back of the net. However, that is not it.

He double-assures it by taking a huge lift.

Above, one can notice how high his right foot is, which all the more forces a keeper to make a move. More than his hop, it's this large back lift that allows him to make goalkeepers look like practice cones.

Thus, the keeper is always wrong-footed, and left stranded.

Irrespective of Jorginho's recent performances against the likes of Arsenal and Spurs which have become subject to major criticism, the Brazil-born midfielder's penalties are a symbol of assurance. He gets them right 9/10 times.

His hop-and-deliver style of shooting penalties is becoming an increasingly difficult commodity to handle, and Chelsea know they have a great bunch of penalty-takers.
