What's the story?

FC Barcelona legend Carles Puyol responded to Real Madrid's Champions League elimination as he took on Twitter to post an 'OMG' message alongside a few celebratory and shocked emojis, moments after the final whistle at the Bernabeu.

Soon after that, the former FC Barcelona star congratulated the Ajax with another tweet.

In case you didn't know..

Ajax Amsterdam knocked out Real Madrid from the Champions League in a thrilling encounter at the Bernabeu. The Dutch side arrived in the Spanish capital being 1-2 down on aggregate despite dominating the first leg at the Johan Cyruff Arena.

Goals from Hakim Ziyech and David Neres saw Real Madrid's saw Los Blancos' 2-1 away lead overturned within the first 20 minutes of the game.

Dusan Tadic, the creator of the opening two goals went on to score the third goal himself just before Madrid forward, Marco Asensio, pulled one back for the hosts. The goal from the Spaniard raised the sense of belief within the Madrid squad. However, a stunning freekick from Lasse Schone sealed the win for the away side, moments later.

The heart of the matter

Carles Puyol, who made 593 appearances for Real Madrid's arch-rivals FC Barcelona, took a slight dig at his former rivals as he took to Twitter following the final whistle at the Bernabeu.

Moments after his first tweet, the six-time La Liga champion congratulated the Dutch side, tweeting, "Congratulations to @AFCAjax, not only for winning against a team like @realmadrid but for how they did it”.

What's next?

Santiago Solari's side, after being shown the exit door from the Copa del Rey and Champions League within a week, now occupies the third spot in the La Liga table - 12 points adrift of their arch-rivals and leaders, FC Barcelona.

The 13-time European champions will face Valladolid in the Spanish league with a view to getting back to winning ways.
