Three strikers at Chelsea have made it cumbersome for Jose Mourinho

Fernando Torres is never far away from media comment and speculation about his future. Throughout the transfer window, he was being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge. As we know, nothing came about and instead, Jose Mourinho has spoken of how we need to adapt the way we play to get Torres back to his best.

Now, with Samuel Eto’o signed for the season, the media once again have questioned the role Torres has here and Eto’o’s selection on Saturday has done little to calm things down.

In response, Torres has taken time out to re-affirm the situation at the club and spoke of the good atmosphere between the strikers as they all compete for the start under Mourinho.

He said: “There is now more competition up front but Demba, Samuel and me are not enemies, we are friends. We are team-mates and are fighting for the same targets. I think it’s really good for the team.

“Eto’o is one of the best strikers I have ever seen. I played against him in Spain many times and you can see the record he had there with Real Mallorca and Barcelona, as well as in Inter.

“I am sure he is going to really enjoy this period of his career with Chelsea. He is training really well, I wish him all the best and will help him in every way that I can to win everything.

“That can be realistic because we have a great squad. We have to think positive.

“Having players who can regain the ball and be really quick is one of the big qualities we have this season in our squad. We have those type of players up front and on the wings.

“That is good for us to play in the space behind. The main thing is to take it step by step, score goals, work for the team and do well when we have the chance and win a trophy.”

I do agree with Torres about thinking positive but as I posted this morning, we have left ourselves in a difficult situation with the three strikers we have left at the club because we have no alternative.

There will be plenty of games when we do not need an alternative approach and the attacking flair he talks of will be more than enough to win us games, but we still need to find a solution to the likes of Everton that we will come up against this season.

It will be interesting to see how the battle between them develops and to see how Torres reacts throughout the season to have real competition for the start once more.
