Find out how the outcome of the game between Chelsea and Arsenal today will have an effect on the Premier League table
It is Matchday 23 in the English Premier League and with just 15 more Matchdays left, the League is slowly starting to heat up. This week, it would be the London Derby where Chelsea will travel to the Emirates Stadium to take on Arsenal in a very important game to both the teams.
Chelsea and Arsenal are 10 and 16 points respectively below leaders, Liverpool and hence, it would take a miracle for either of these teams to win the Premier League. Most Importantly, Manchester City is just 4 points behind Liverpool and as for now, only these two teams are in contention to win the title. With the loss to Manchester United last week, Tottenham Hotspurs have also fallen behind in the race to be the English Champions.
As the table stands now, Chelsea and Arsenal are seated at No.4 and No.5 respectively and the result of their game would have an impact on the Spurs and Manchester United who are sitting at No.3 and No.6 respectively. Watford is at No.7 with 32 points and they are unlikely to get affected by today's game.
Let us analyze the outcomes the game would have on other teams.
Chelsea is just 1 point below Spurs and they are just one goal behind in the goal difference. Chelsea was not able to qualify to the Champions League last season and hence, that would be their immediate priority right now.
If Chelsea would go on to win this game, they would be at No.3 until Tottenham face Fulham tomorrow. Spurs are having a striker crisis at their club and if they lose, Chelsea will have full momentum going into the EFL Cup semi-final on Friday.
A Chelsea win could clear the way for resurgent Manchester United to get to No.5 if they win against Brighton today. Arsenal could face the prospect of losing the Champions League spot yet again.
Arsenal is 6 points below Chelsea and a win for them would reduce the gap between No.4 and No.5 which would make the race to the Champions League very interesting.
Tottenham will also be offered some breathing space to strengthen their position at No.3 in the Premier League table. Based on United's game against Brighton, the Red Devils could either be level with Spurs or fall behind them. However, the margin between Manchester United and Chelsea would be 3 points which will keep the Champions League spot at a striking distance.
A draw would be equivalent to a loss for both the teams as they would just gain one point and most importantly, lose 2 points in the match.
Tottenham would get a 3 point lead while Manchester United will have it easy to reach the No.5 spot in the table. It would also make the race for the No.4 spot very intense.
