Football Gossip - Lehmann's legendary notes

Remember when German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann took a note out of his socks before stoning Argentina in the 2006 FIFA World Cup quarterfinals shootout? It is one of the most memoramble stories in the long and rich tradition of Germany vs Argentina matches. Matches between these two gigants of the game have been always full of passion and emotions, full of rivalary and tradition!

Germany beat Argentina on penalties in the quarterfinal and the German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann stopped two of the Argentine shots. Only few people at the Olympiastadion noticed, but Lehmann was handed notes before each kick to give him an edge in Germany’s shootout win over Argentina. The slip of paper was full with analysis of where each Argentine player usually put his shot.

“Goalkeeping coach Andy Kopke scribbled the vital details on that little piece of paper, which went on to achieve so much fame,” Lehmann said in an extract from his autobiography. The player was the hero of Berlin on the day. But the scrap of paper, which the keeper pulled from his shin-pad and consulted before the eyes of each Argentine penalty-taker, became the stuff of myth and legend.

The note raised € 1 million ($1.3 million) for charity at an auction in late 2006.
