Former Manchester United midfielder, the injury prone England international Owen Hargreaves, is all set to join Manchester City after a medical with the “noisy neighbors” at the Bridgewater Hospital.
According to The Sun, the 30-year-old looked happy as he was greeted by City medical staff at the back of the building when he made his exit.
The move comes as a shock for many since Hargreaves’ move to West Bromwich Albion was considered to be all but done. A few other clubs, including the London based Tottenham and Arsenal, were also the possible suitors for the defensive midfielder whom United signed from Bayern Munich in 2007.
But in an unprecedented turn of events, Hargreaves has been short-listed by City as a back up for Yaya Toure, who will miss out a few weeks in January due to African Cup of Nations.
Hargreaves was earlier released by Manchester United following his never-ending knee and hamstring injuries that allowed him to feature in just 5 competitive matches over the past 3 years.
City earlier approached AC Milan’s Mark van Bommel, but the Serie A club turned down their offer. Van Bommel admitted that the story was true and said:
”City were one of the clubs that wanted me in the winter so it’s not as though their interest has come from nowhere, but AC Milan have a very clear position and I can live with that. ‘I feel good as a footballer and I am appreciated here. And my family feels at home here.”
