Gomel, Joe Allen and the Agger/Skrtel Situation

There is a lot of stuff to talk about at the moment, including the domino effect, FC Gomel, Joe Allen and the restructuring of Liverpool FC.

Tuned in to yesterday’s The Anfield Wrap podcast, (lovely podcast, fantastic team, all Liverpool FC fan should check this out) and I must say, that their discussion of the Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel issue provoked an idea of mine that this domino effect would happen.

It’s the idea that if Liverpool FC sell either one of their centerbacks, the other will follow suit. This being because both players actually don’t seem happy at Liverpool, whilst if they let one go, the Reds would be almost forced to sell the other. Then, this follows on. You have players like Pepe Reina unhappy with the club and its ambitions, and then he will follow suit. This is the delicate situation that Brendan Rodgers has really got to sort out.

The first way to sort this out would be to just go ahead and use that transfer fund to quickly go about the business and show that the owners, along with him, are just as committed to trying to achieve success for the club that is Liverpool FC. The second would be to just do a ‘Van Persie’ and quite simply not let them move on. Quite simply, they are the bedrock of Liverpool FC, and with our defence the strongest department from the 2011/12, Rodgers would ideally want consistency in the back 4 for his first season at the helm.

The third way to look at it, and the most dangerous way as well, is to sell them. Considering that Daniel Agger is fairly fragile (reference to two/three years ago), and he had a good EURO 2012 and a sensational 2011/12 campaign for Liverpool, the Reds could play it smart and sell the Danish defender. The same goes with Skrtel, with him looking like an almost average defender whenever not playing beside Daniel Agger. That would be the first of perhaps 3/4 good seasons we will ever get out of the Slovakian. His value is at its highest at the moment, so it might remain wise to cash in.

But it’s a very delicate situation. I won’t go into worst case scenarios, but you know how badly it could turn out.

Away from that for now, apparently Joe Allen looks really close to finalizing a deal with Liverpool FC. We have met the demands of Joe Allen and he is set to move to Liverpool, subject to an agreement with Swansea City. I hope that the Reds didn’t overpay to secure his personal agreement, otherwise we might just have another Alberto Aquilani situation on our hands.

Joe Allen sincerely looks like an absolutely classy player. He was among the top 5 passers (more than 20 games) from the top 5 European leagues last term, so I reckon that he would be Liverpool’s answer to Xabi Alonso, someone who we have really struggled to replace.

Liverpool are set to take on FC Gomel tomorrow. I reckon that the team that should start should be: (depending on fitness, but I’ll pick the best squad available)

Reina Johnson, Agger, Skrtel, Enrique Gerrard, Lucas, Henderson Downing, Borini, Cole

Sterling represents another strong option for Liverpool on the wings, whilst I would like to see Suarez returning in a spot out wide.
