Hamburg, after their shameful 9-2 defeat at the hands of Bundesliga table toppers Bayern Munich, have decided to repay their fans with “hamburgers” for the faith they showed despite the loss.

The club have invited all the fans to a barbeque at their training center later this month. This step is being taken by the club as an apology to all their fans, who went through the humiliation of that embarrassing defeat. The cost is believed to covered by the players.

Hamburg’s defeat equalled the record for the biggest ever Bundesliga defeat, which also pushed them to ninth place. The ‘Grillfest’ is scheduled for April 21, after Hamburg’s match with Fortuna Dusseldorf the previous day.

Hamburg’s goalkeeper Rene Alder told the club’s website that the squad ‘just wanted to reach out to the fans’.

Hamburg captain Heiko Westermann said, “There are no words to explain the game today. I am ashamed for myself and the team for the weak performance over 90 minutes.”

Club chief Carl Edgar Jarchow was very critical of his team, and said: “The team totally failed and gave up after only five minutes. That is disgraceful and unworthy of a Bundesliga team. We will draw our conclusions from this game.”
