Heynckes hints at Lewandowski joining Bayern

Outgoing Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes has hinted that Borussia Dortmund centre-forward Robert Lewandowski might be joining Bayern Munich next season. The striker has been in a rich vein of form this season, scoring 24 goals in 34 Bundesliga games, including a run of 12 goals in 12 games, setting a new club record. He also scored 10 goals in Dortmund’s Champions league campaign this season.

According to Heynckes, the Pole is set to follow his team-mate Mario Gotze to the Allianz Arena, where ex-Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola is set to take over the European champions next season.

“As far as I know, Mario Goetze will be joining Bayern Munich and I don’t think Lewandowski will be hanging about too much either,” said Heynckes.

“Then, of course, you’ve got two top attackers as well.” he added.

“My successor will, of course, be able to take over a perfectly functioning team.”

The striker has a contract with BVB which expires in June 2014. Earlier, Bayern confirmed the joining of Mario Goetze for £32 million next season after activating his release clause. Since Lewandowski does not have such a clause in his contract, Bayern Munich will have to negotiate a transfer fee to secure his signature.

Lewandowski’s advisor Maik Barthel has insisted that he will be leaving BVB in June. His manager Cezary Kucharski told Polish television that the forward will soon “play at a bigger club”. It has been reported that both Kucharski and Barthel are reported to have been invited to Bayern’s post-final celebration party in London, thus fuelling rumours of his transfer to the Munich club.

The sale of their top two players will mean that they have a huge task up ahead to find replacements. The Borussians are said to be in talks with Porto’s Colombian striker Jackson Martinez. They are also rumoured to be interested in Ajax’s Danish play-maker Christian Eriksen.
